Characterisation of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis in Copenhagen and comparison to vancomycin-susceptible isolates

We characterized all vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VREfs) from two departments of clinical microbiology in Copenhagen, Denmark from 2010-2015. Whole genome sequences of the 15 VREfs isolates were analyzed and compared to eight vancomycin-susceptible isolates. All VREfs isolates carried vanB and 12 belonged to the hospital-adapted clone ST6/CC2. Genetic diversity within the ST6 cluster and the sporadic incidence of VREfs confirm lack of recent clonal spread in our hospitals.
