Thaumarchaeota diversity was determined using 16S rRNA and ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) genes from samples collected in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) near the Mississippi River Plume, collected on the R/V Pelican in May 2012 to compare to work done in March 2010 (Tolar et al., 2013, Frontiers in Microbiology). Samples were sequenced alongside those collected in the Southern Ocean published as Tolar et al., 2016, ISME Journal.
