About the Electricity Supply Monitoring Initiative Electricity Supply Monitoring Initiative (ESMI) is a program being implemented by Prayas (Energy Group), a non-governmental, non-profit organisation based in Pune, India. The initiative aims to improve transparency and provide evidence based feedback about the quality of electricity supply. Under ESMI, specially designed, mobile data enabled monitors have been deployed at each location and supply quality data is published daily on watchyourpower.org. ESMI was selected as a finalist for Google Impact Challenge, India, 2013, given to NGOs using technology for social impact. It was launched in March 2015 and currently covers over 60 districts across India. How the data is collected The electricity supply monitor is an electronic device as small as a handheld radio. The device is designed to work as a plug and play unit and starts working as soon as it is plugged into a plug point. The device measures and records voltage with an accuracy of +/- 4 V, across a live electricity supply line for every minute and transmits the same over GPRS network to a central server. About the data The data uploaded in the dataverse has been collected from ESMI installations in India over the years, since 2014. The data is location-wise, minute-wise voltage data. All possible care and efforts have been undertaken, to verify the interruptions from our side, however the data has been made available on ‘as is where is’ basis. In case of queries, kindly write to us on esmi@prayaspune.org. A few pointers to consider before using the data • The time period for the data is from November 2014 to December 2018 (would be updated from time to time) • The data for a location may not be continuous across the years • A ‘0’ voltage reading means a power outage • Missing data should be interpreted as unavailable data and not as interruption • Certain locations have been marked as [Offline], which indicates that the monitoring at the locations has been discontinued Structure of files The location information file has columns as follows Location name - Name of the location where the data was collected From date - Data is available from this date To date - Data is available till this date District - District where the location is situated State - State where the location is situated Category - Whether the location is rural, town, or a mega city Connection type - Domestic/Non-domestic/Agricultural connection The data files have columns as follows Location name - Name of the location where the data was collected Date - Date for the voltage recording Hour - Hour of the day (0 to 23) Min 0 - Voltage for the 0th minute of the hour Min 1 - Voltage for the 1st minute of the hour ... Min 59 - Voltage for the 59th minute of the hour Terms of use The information made available on the website and through ESMI is made available on ‘as is where is’ basis. Though reasonable care is taken to provide reliable data, neither Prayas, nor any of its agents, contractors, employees can be held responsible for use of any data or information made available herein. Anybody is welcome to make full use of the information available herein for any non-commercial, academic and research purpose, provided source of the information is clearly acknowledged. We will highly appreciate if we are intimated of use of this data and a copy of the publication, paper or report using this data is shared with us at esmi@prayaspune.org
