<P>Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.</P><br>The aim of this survey was to provide nationally representative information on the personal and domestic characteristics of home-based workers, on the nature and organisation of home-based work, and on related issues such as: employment status, accidents and health problems; pay rates and earnings, trade union membership, reasons for and attitudes towards home-based work, how such jobs fit into work histories, and home-workers' attitudes to existing and new protective legislation.<br>
The survey was a follow-up to the spring <i>1981 Labour Force Survey</i> (SN:1888)<br><B>Main Topics</B>:<BR><br>Work location; occupation; industry; hours worked; job tenure; second jobs; work experience; qualifications; trade union membership; employment status; labour turnover; weekly and hourly earnings; reasons for doing home-based work; attitudes to homework - satisfaction with job and pay; awareness of and attitudes to employment protection legislation-accidents; health; employer's control; plus all the usual personal and domestic characteristics variables.<br>
Job segregation; sex discrimination; enterprise; self-employment - family workers; equivalent on-site work; transfers to home-based work; household income-poverty and financial hardship; work orientations; sex roles.<br>
Many questions and classifications were taken from the General Household Survey, so that comparisons could be drawn with GHS data on the whole labour force or population of working age
