Chromatium okenii is a photosynthetic purple sulfur bacterium. It was originally described more than 100 years ago. The cells are very large and accumulate intracellular sulfur globules. It is prominent in many lakes where it performs anaerobic oxidation of sulfide by anoxygenic photosynthesis.
