Data for "Quantifying hierarchy and dynamics in U.S. faculty hiring and retention" (Wapman, Zhang, Clauset & Larremore, Nature 2022, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-022-05222-x; Author Correction 2023, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-023-06379-9). Version 2026.08 — regenerated from the original analysis pipeline (same underlying data, sample, and rankings as the paper) to fix several bugs in the export step and to make attrition units explicit. Snapshot of GitHub tag v2026.08 of https://github.com/LarremoreLab/us-faculty-hiring-networks. Changes relative to the previous version (10.5281/zenodo.7249723, which holds the September 2022 data files; see the README changelog for full detail):- institution-stats.csv now includes every ranked institution (12,669 rows; 2,837 ranked institution-networks were previously dropped, leaving gaps in OrdinalPrestigeRank). Ranks are unchanged for all previously published rows.- Attrition is reported in two explicit units: faculty (NonAttritedFaculty, AttritedFaculty) and faculty-years (NonAttritionEvents, AttritionEvents), following the paper's Methods, in institution-stats.csv and stats.csv. The previous NonAttritionEvents column held the total number of faculty.- stats.csv: the empirical FractionUpHierarchyHires is restored (the null-model value is now in "FractionUpHierarchyHires (null model)"); the (non US/Canada/UK) attrition columns no longer include faculty with no recorded doctoral institution.- edge-lists.csv: 6,134 artifact rows (no doctoral institution, blank Total) removed; all other edges unchanged.- README corrected (file names, PrestigeRank direction: 1 = most prestigious, column definitions and units). We thank Todd Jones (Mississippi State University) and Alex Bell (Georgia State University) for reporting and diagnosing the missing institutions.
