Ferrar Dolerite Upper Taylor Glacier Region

This set of data describes Ferrar Dolerite rock samples collected during the
2002-2003 Antarctic field season from the Upper Taylor Glacier and Convoy Range
regions of southern Victoria Land. The rock collection includes samples from
eighteen sites (outcrops along the escarpment extending from Mt. Feather to
Windy Gully, Rector Ridge, East Beacon, Pearse Valley, Pandoras Spire, Fris
Hills, Mt. Gran, Elkhorn Ridge) that include both smaller dikes and sills and
regionally prominent intrusions (Basement Sill and Peneplain Sill). At each
site, 20 to 60, 2.5 cm diameter, 10 cm long, oriented drill cores were
collected over the interval of 2-3 meters from the intrusive contacts. Rock
magnetic properties (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and natural remnant
magnetization) have been measured at Byrd Polar Research Center, Ohio State
University. The collection also includes 5 to 10 oriented hand-samples of
contact material from each site that have been used for petrofabric analysis
and geochemistry. Samples have been analyzed for major and trace elements by
XRF at Southern Connecticut State University. Orientation of mesoscopic
structural features along the contacts (fingers, grooves, cusps) have been
recorded in the area extending a few hundred meters away from each of the
drilling localities. The larger scale architecture of the intrusive system
providing connections between sample sites, has been documented by field
sketches and photo mosaics.
