The Shrew of Nagaland: A Remarkable New Genus and Species from Northeast India and a Discussion of the Phylogeny and Classification of the Soricidae (Mammalia)

The goal of this project is to describe a new genus and species of shrew from Nagaland in India, as well as to test its relationship to other extant and fossil shrew genera. We accomplished this through a morphological description of the single known specimen and through extracting DNA from a clip of the study skin. A target-capture approach was used to enrich for 5,000 ultraconserved element loci. Unenriched library was pooled and sequenced with the enriched library in order to recover mitochondrial sequences. The results of this project have expanded the known genetic and morphological diversity of shrews.
