Visual discrimination of natural scenes by mice

Mice use vision to navigate in
natural environments. However,
there are no publicly available data sets on how well mice can discriminate natural
scenes. Here, we provide data on a natural scene
discrimination task for mice using an automated touchscreen system. In this two-alternative,
forced-choice task, two natural scenes are displayed simultaneously on a touchscreen.
One image is the target natural scene, and the other is one of several
distractor natural scenes, which vary in similarity to the target. Mice are trained
to touch the target image to receive a reward. We provide behavior data for
nine mice, which includes correct rates and response times. We also provide the
image files used in the task, and computer code to reproduce or extend the
analysis we have previously presented. This data set can be used to test hypotheses
about which image features influence mouse behavior in the task and to provide
constraining data for models of the mouse visual system.
