Since 1978 the Victorian Government had sponsored a Salute to Australia Pageant which commenced as a result of the unveiling of The history of Transport Mural at Spencer Street Railway Station. In 1978 the funds allocated to the Salute to Australia Pageant was re-directed to the new Committee which assumed the responsibility for all activities associated with Australia Day.The Australia Day Committee was established to develop the observance of Australia Day and to foster a sense of national pride within all members of the community.Secretarial support is provided by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.The P1 consignment of this series consists of documents relating to all the arrangements made in connection with the unveiling of the History of Transport Mural at Spencer Street Railway Station on the Australia Day Holiday on the 30 January, 1978.
