To investigate whether and how incompatibilities between the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes could contribute to interspecies reproductive barriers, and hence to speciation, we performed reciprocal mitochondrial genome replacement (MR) between widely divergent subspecies of mice. Our results strongly suggest that functional incompatibility between nuclear and mitochondrial genomes could contribute to postzygotic reproductive isolation in mammals.
