Studies have been undertaken to elucidate the possible cause of a degradation phenomena observed on monuments and mural paintings from Matera district located in Basilicata Region ("Sassi of Matera"), southern Italy. After sampling (from walls) "in vitro" isolation of various fungi and bacteria was performed and pure cultures were obtained and identified both morphologically and molecularly.
