Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is widely used in teaching and research laboratories, but TLC plate cutters remain expensive, with most commercial models priced above $800 USD. This article presents a low-cost, open-source hardware design for a TLC plate cutter that delivers comparable functionality for approximately $80 USD. The device incorporates a commercial-grade Toyo TC-17 scoring wheel mounted in a 3D-printed head, which glides smoothly along stainless-steel guide rails with linear bearings. A 6 mm aluminum baseplate ensures structural rigidity and precise cuts. The cutter has been used successfully with glass-backed TLC plates in chemistry laboratory settings. This design lowers the barrier to accessing precision TLC plate cutting and is suitable for chemistry educators, research laboratories, and field-based research teams. A complete bill of materials, building instructions, and STL files for 3D printing are provided in the Supporting Information. The cutter is easily assembled using only commonly available hand toolssuch as a drill, center punch, screwdriver, and scissorsmaking it accessible to instructors, student workers, and hobbyists alike.
