Enamel development defects in patients visiting the Dr. René Puig Bentz clinic at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University

This descriptive, cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of enamel development defects
among patients attending the Dr René Puig Bentz clinic at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National
University. The study was prompted by the scarcity of research on this topic in the Dominican
Republic, underscoring the importance of determining its prevalence to enhance early diagnosis and
optimise dental prevention and treatment.
Information was initially collected by administering a questionnaire containing general questions about
medical history and relevant diseases. A clinical evaluation was then performed to determine the
presence or absence of EDDs, and the presence of caries in the affected teeth was also recorded to
enable proper differentiation. Finally, intraoral photographs were taken to accurately document the
condition of the dentition.
The results showed a high prevalence of enamel development defects. This finding confirms that EDDs
are a common structural alteration within the study population, reflecting notable quantitative and
qualitative changes to dental enamel in a university clinical context.
