SIMILARITIES IN THE VOCABULARY OF ENGLISH AND SPANISH: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

This article looks at the similarities between the vocabularies of English and Spanish. The two languages belong to different branches of the Indo-European family (Germanic and Romance), but they share thousands of words because of Latin, French, Greek and Arabic influence and because of direct contact in the Americas. The article describes cognates, regular suffix correspondences, loanwords in both directions and shared scientific terminology. It also discusses false friends, which are the main danger of this similarity, and gives practical ideas for the classroom.
