资源简介:
This collection consists of images, spreadsheets, GIS and site record data from a trial trench evaluation and geoarchaeological assessment by Oxford Archaeology. Work occurred in part of the site of the OXPENS Masterplan area from August to September 2022. The eleven geoarchaeological boreholes have highlighted the potential for organic peaty sediments to survive at a depth of several metres below the surface, buried beneath alluvial deposits and varying thicknesses of later deposits and modern made-ground. The evaluation revealed multiple features. Within the north-western part of the site, two medieval pits, a medieval trackway and a ditch were recorded in Trench 7. These may be associated with the nearby Osney Abbey. In Trench 2, archaeological deposits and features were recorded which probably relate to the Civil War defensive outwork known as 'Harts Sconce'. Within Trench 6 an east-west ditch with an area of raised ground to it's north was recorded. The structural remains of the St Ebbe's Bathing Place were recorded in Trench 2, which was overlain by large early 20th century deposit of made-ground.
