# Neural mechanisms underlying decisions to express or suppress emotions ## Overview This dataset contains the raw magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data associated with the study: **Neural mechanisms underlying decisions to express or suppress emotions** The aim of this study was to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying decisions to express or suppress emotions during socially relevant situations using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). During the experiment, participants completed two intermixed trial types. In emotion trials, participants read emotionally evocative social scenarios describing everyday interpersonal situations and decided whether they would express the emotion elicited by each scenario. In control trials, participants judged whether the presented sentence was displayed in italic font. Behavioral responses and reaction times were recorded during MRI acquisition. The dataset is organized according to the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) specification (version 1.8.0). --- ## MRI Acquisition MRI data were acquired using a Siemens Prisma 3 Tesla MRI scanner equipped with a 32-channel head coil at Hitotsubashi University. The dataset contains raw MRI data only. No preprocessing has been applied. The dataset includes: - T1-weighted structural MRI - BOLD functional MRI - Spin-echo field map images - Event files (.tsv) for all functional runs - A stimulus list (`stimuli/scenario_OpenNeuro.tsv`) referenced by the `stimulus_id` column in each `events.tsv` file --- ## Data Organization The dataset follows the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) specification (version 1.8.0). The dataset contains one imaging session (ses-01) for each participant. Participant identifiers correspond to the BIDS identifiers used throughout the released dataset. Some participant identifiers are intentionally absent because those participants were excluded from the final analyses or are not included in this public release. The remaining participant identifiers are preserved to maintain consistency between the MRI data, behavioral data, and the associated publication. --- ## Anonymization All MRI data have been de-identified prior to public release. Structural MRI images have been **defaced** to remove personally identifiable facial features prior to public release. No personally identifiable information is included in this dataset. --- ## Funding This work was supported by: - JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number 22K21357 - Hitotsubashi University HIAS-BRC Operating Grant - AIST–Hitotsubashi University Collaborative Program for Integrating Humanities and Sciences --- ## Contact Correspondence concerning this dataset should be addressed to: **Yoko Mano, Ph.D.** Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), Center for Brain Science (BRC), Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, Japan E-mail: yoko.mano@r.hit-u.ac.jp --- ## Analysis Code Analysis scripts associated with this study are available in the following GitHub repository: https://github.com/yokomano/Emotion-Expression-fMRI The repository contains preprocessing, first-level, second-level, ROI, and figure-generation scripts used in the reported analyses. --- ## Citation If you use this dataset, please cite: Mano, Y., Nakaya, K., Komeda, H., Toyama, A., Fukuda, H., Miyamoto, Y., Kitayama, S., & Suzuki, S.
