This study aims to dissect the dual roles of CMN and clonal plant interconnections in modulating nutrient transfer and plant development under variable sunlight conditions. By employing an innovative experimental design that includes manipulation of clonal ramet formation and CMNs, we tested how plant growth, carbon storage, and nutrient transfer is influenced when plants interconnect with a ramet, CMN, or both forms of connection. Our findings provide novel insights into the adaptive strategies of clonal plants and provide a first look into the relevance of CMN functioning in the context of alternative plant interconnections.
