Our project aims to elucidate the fungal etiology underlying suspected cases of coccidioidomycosis. To uncover the fungal etiology behind suspected coccidioidomycosis cases, our study yielded a surprising revelation: the isolation of two Sarocladium spinifis strains. This revelation prompted a comprehensive exploration into the phylogenetic and genomic characteristics of S. spinifis, alongside co-cultivation experiments with Coccidioides. Through meticulous analysis, we have uncovered the suppressive effect of Sarocladium spinifis growth on Coccidioides, offering a promising avenue for potential antifungal treatments. These discoveries not only deepen our understanding of coccidioidomycosis but also pave the way for innovative therapeutic strategies to combat this fungal infection.
