Submerged macrophytes are a primary component of lake ecosystems and play an important role in maintaining a clear water state (Graneli and Solander, 1988; Jeppesen et al., 1997). They mitigate the resuspension of surface sediment and prevent the release of labile phosphorus (P) from sediment (Blindow et al., 2014; Horppila and Nurminen, 2003; Madsen et al.,2001), provide habitat for aquatic animals, and compete with phytoplankton for nutrition (Jeppesen et al., 1998).
