Writing Poetry in Response to Digital Images: Rethinking Ekphrasis in the Digital Age

The vast quantities of digital images uploaded online, saved on ‘clouds’, and downloaded on personal devices provide ample opportunities for ekphrastic encounter and response. My thesis examines the process of writing ekphrasis in response to such images and to generate insights into the characteristics, functions, and possibilities of the genre today. I argue that ekphrasis as a genre and practice is highly responsive to the medial conditions of images and is thus perennially open to new ways of viewing and writing. As a form of creative-practice research, the thesis consists of a poetry manuscript entitled Future Continuous and an exegesis.
