Grapevine3D: A Root System Architecture Dataset of 48-Year-Old Field-Grown Grapevines

We here share a dataset comprising high-resolution, three-dimensional root system architecture data of 48-year-old field-grown grapevines. This dataset encompasses 3D data of 3 grapevines planted in 1977 with Vitis vinifera L. cv. Riesling grafted on V. berlandieri × V. riparia rootstock 5C at a spacing of 1.9 m × 1.3 m in Oestrich-Winkel, Rheingau Valley, Germany. Root systems were excavated and digitized during the dormant phase during early spring of 2025 (see metadata for more details). The dataset includes raw data files in .txt format of root system architectures, corresponding RSML files capturing root topology, and .vtp files for 3D visualization. By releasing this dataset, we invite fellow researchers to utilize Grapevine3D for further investigation into grapevine architecture and to contribute to the collective advancement of modeling in perennial cropping systems.
