Effects of gut microbiota-derived sphingolipids on host hepatic metabolism

Bacterial sphingolipids have the potential to participate in host hepatic metabolic pathways but the direct role of these bacterial lipids in host metabolism is unknown. Our transcriptomic data from mice compares liver gene expression between mice orally-gavaged with sphingolipid-producing Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and mice orally-gavaged with the sphingolipids-null B. thetaiotaomicron; and data from HepG2 cells demonstrates the specific effects from a novel sphingolipid derived from B. thetaiotaomicron.
