资源简介:
Inadequate carbon mitigation increases discussions on Solar Radiation Modification (SRM)/ Solar geoengineering (SGE). A key concern is that excessive SRM may cause sudden and large damage, i.e., the SRM Tipping Point (STP) risk. This study explores the effect of stochastic STP on SRM policy (radiation control rate) and abatement policy by developing a stochastic-dynamic integrated assessment model. We show that when STP damage is irreversible, STP risk leads to a conservative SRM and aggressive abatement policy in pre-tipping periods. But once the STP event occurs, the optimal radiation control rate will jump up significantly, and the optimal carbon tax will jump down significantly. When STP damage is reversible or exacerbated, the optimal strategies in post-tipping periods are the opposite. Sensitivity analyses show that it is vital to correctly estimate the damage and probability of STP. Therefore, STP risks should be thoroughly assessed before SRM is deployed.
