Plants detect the presence of nearby vegetation as a reduction in the ratio of red to far-red light (low R/FR). This proximity shade signal can be simulated in the laboratory by supplementing white light (W) with Far Red (W+FR). Tomato is a shade avoider plant that exhibits a pronounced multilevel response to proximity shade (low R/FR). In this study the response to simulated shade was evaluated in the tomato cultivar M82 and in the Solanum pennellii introgression line IL2-2 at the transcriptomic level. Dark-germinated M82 and IL2-2 seedlings were transferred to soil four day after imbibition and grown under white light for ten days. Then, some of them were left under white and others were exposed to white plus far red for 24h before extracting RNA from leaves. The extracted RNA samples were tested using the DNBSEQ platform.
