Digital Archive from Level 2/3 Descriptive and Analytical Historic Building Recording and Archaeological Excavation at Shire Hill Hospital, Glossop, Derbyshire, September 2023 - December 2024

This collection comprises images and site records from a Level 2/3 Descriptive and Analytical Historic Building Recording and Archaeological Excavation at Shire Hill Hospital, Glossop, Derbyshire. The work was carried out by Archaeological Services WYAS from September 2023 to December 2024. Shire Hill Hospital comprises the former Glossop Union Workhouse built in 1832-1834 with later-C19 and early-C20 extensions, and Infirmary built in 1896-1897 with C20 extensions. The building recording focused on the most historic structures on the site including parts of the original workhouse, workhouse infirmary and a small cottage building. The excavation work followed a previous trial trench evaluation and involved the investigation of three areas of the site where former workhouse buildings once stood. The project produced evidence for the development of the site from extant historic structures and excavations of the remains of demolished early buildings of the workhouse.
