This dataset corresponds to Table 1. Among 741 ancient and modern Treponema genomes, most ancient genomes (66.7%, 10/15) originate from the Americas, versus 26.6% (193/726) of modern genomes (Fisher’s exact test, p = 0.0015). Ancient samples are proportionally more frequent in the Americas (4.93%) than elsewhere (0.93%). Nevertheless, Treponema genomes are globally distributed, suggesting Treponema pallidum may have existed outside the Americas before colonization.
