The study was performed on three different mesophilic anaerobic digestion processes of the source separated organic fraction of solid municipal waste. One process was performed at wet conditions with total solids concentration of 4%, a second process was performed at high solids concentration, about 30% without inoculation and the third process was conducted at high solids concentration (30%) with inoculum generated by previous high solids anaerobic digestion of organic waste in a ratio of 1:1 by weight. During this last process a give fraction of liquid digestate generated was recirculated through the mass under treatment.The three tests started contemporary and lasted for 30 days during which biogas generation and composition were investigated. At given periods samples form the wet process and from the liquid digestate of the inoculated high solids process where withdrawn and analysed. During these test the microbial ecology was investigated and correlated to the different operating conditions and performances inside and of the digesters.The goal of the work was to correlated the performances of different mesophilic anaerobic digestion of the organic waste with the internal conditions of the digester and with the microbial guilds for a more deep comprehension of the anaerobic digestion process.
