VPRS 12778 Family Violence Prevention Committee General Correspondence Files

The Family Violence Prevention Committee was convened by the Attorney-General's Department (VA 2825) in mid 1987 to monitor the Crimes (Family Violence) Act 1987 and to oversee government initiatives to raise awareness and reduce the incidence of family violence in the community. The Committee was part of the Policy and Research Division of the department.Task forces were established by the Committee to develop and implement initiatives aimed at professional education and training, and housing initiatives for victims of family violence.In 1993, following a change of government, a consolidation took place regarding family violence and the Family Violence Prevention Committee was merged with the Community Council Against Violence to form the Victorian Community Council Against Violence (VA 4275).The files within this series contain material pertaining to research papers, presentation material, reports to the Attorney-General, on social welfare issues, Equal Opportunity and proposed changes to various Acts such as the Magistrates' Court Act.
