VPRS 16838 Nursing Staff Record Books, Nurses Record Book

This series records details of the training of RCH nursing staff who trained at the Royal Children's Hospital. Information includes the nurse's name, date entered, date left (with comments), the month subjects were taken, examination results and comments. There is a name index at the front of each volume.Training initially took 3 years plus extra time for sick leave. From 1939, a six month stint at Royal Melbourne Hospital officially began which stretched some trainees' time out to four years if they had sick leave. Nearly all trainee nurses have the date they left, even if they were subsequently re-appointed to the hospital as staff nurses.In 1960 the RCH introduced a card system to record training details. The last record created for a nurse in this series was on 4/10/1960. Nurses who entered training after this date are recorded on the card system. As well, records for nurses in training at the time of the introduction of the card system were copied to the card system and continued in that system. The cards are in the custody of the RCH.The existence of training records of the type in this series prior to 1917 is subject to further research.Ward reports for nurses in this series may be found in VPRS 16825 Ward Reports.Prior to transfer to Public Record Office Victoria, the records in this series were maintained as part of the RCH Archives. They were part of RCH accession number 2005/004.
