Inulin-type fructans (ITF) are prebiotic dietary fibers (DF) that may confer beneficial health effects, by interacting with the gut microbiota. The relevance of microbial-derived metabolites in the improvement of health by ITF requires adequate human intervention studies. We have tested the hypothesis that a dietary intervention promoting inulin intake versus placebo influences fecal metabolites and markers related to gut integrity and inflammation in obese patients.
