SDJ discusses the socio-economic status of dyers in the past. They had excellent incomes and were among the richest people in their community. Their black hands, deliberately shown in public, were thus a sign of social distinction as well as a sign for recruiting new customers. In this regard, SDJ also mentions the tours undertaken by the dyers in the localities of the region to collect the products to be dyed (collectively referred to by the term dèbè).
