1 min cosmic noise absorption data of May 2024 from La Jolla riometers of Finnish Riometer Network
Subset of the 1 minute cosmic noise absorption data from the LaJolla riometers of the Finnish Riometer Network operated by Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, University of Oulu. The used quiet day curve for absorption determination is visually inspected in sidereal time plots from quiet period of early May 2024. The files are one file per station in ASCII format having 1440 minute values per day starting from 00:00UT. The missing values are reported as NaN. The station code is in filename suffix of file name and the date is given in name file. The riometer instruments used in this data set are La Jolla narrowband riometers in different frequencies. S05 (SOD, 67.42°N 26.39°E) and IVA (68.55°N 27.28°E) operated in 30.0MHz and ROV (66.78°N 25.94°E) at 32.4MHz. The used riometer receiver antenna type was dual parallel half-wavelength dipole forming a theoretical 60 degree beam pointing to zenith. The data is used in the paper " Global Response of the MLT and Topside Ionospheric Electron Temperatures to the “Extreme” Geomagnetic Storm of 10-13 May 2024" submitted to JGR: Space Physics by Parihar et al. (2025JA034169 ).

The impact of energetic electron precipitation on nighttime atmospheric ozone during geomagnetic storms
Energetic electron precipitation (EEP) during geomagnetic storms plays a significant role in accelerating ozone depletion in the stratosphere at high latitudes. While previous studies predominantly focused on atmospheric responses to individual EEP events, this research aims to establish the statistical patterns of EEP-induced ozone variations during geomagnetic storms. Using data from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) collected between August 2004 and December 2015, we have analyzed the ozone change at latitudes of 55° to 80° under nighttime conditions during 31 geomagnetic storms. The results reveal an average ozone loss rate of approximately 10% at altitudes of 70–80 km during storm periods. Additionally, storm-time ozone depletion exhibits significant seasonal variability, with the most prominent losses occurring during winter-time storms. This study also highlights the complexity of ozone variations during two consecutive geomagnetic storms that occurred in December 2015. The ozone depletion initially appeared above 60 km during the first storm, while the second storm further intensified and extended the depletion down to 40 km. Simulations using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with the D-region ion chemistry (WACCM-D) indicate that during these consecutive storms, atmospheric concentrations of HOX and NOX undergo two significant enhancements and the cumulative effects become more pronounced than the simple sum of these two storms. Part of these excessive HOX and NOX species accumulate in situ, while the rest is transported downward to react with the ozone, leading to large-scale ozone depletion at low altitudes.

Alberta Differential Magnetometer Measurement (DMM) Data from 2021
This data product consists of a magnetometer dataset from the augmented differential magnetometer measurement (DMM) study conducted in Alberta, Canada in 2021 and GIC data from a nearby transformer substation. This data was analyzed and presented in the paper "Using a Differential Magneoter Measurement to Infer Geomagnetically Induced Currents: An Augmented Approach." Specifically, these datasets were used to create Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 in this paper. The data files available here are from two magnetometers (USB4 and USB5) on a magnetically quiet day, September 26th, 2021, and a magnetically active day, October, 12th, 2021. USB4 data is from the underline sensor and USB5 is from the remote sensor. Each DMM data file includes the time in UT and magnetic field measurements in the x, y, and z components, where Bx is magnetic north and By is magnetic east. The GIC data file includes the local time (Mountain Daylight Time = GMT-6) and the transformer neutral-to-ground current at the Ellerslie substation (89S) in both transformers (T1 and T2) during the magnetic storm on October 12th, 2021. The magnetic data has a resolution of 1 Hz. The GIC data has a resolution of 0.5 Hz.

Strong Altitudinal Discrepancies in the Evolution of the Southern Storm Enhanced Density and Tongue of Ionization During the Super Geomagnetic Storm on 10 May 2024
This study investigates the three-dimensional evolution of the Storm Enhanced Density (SED) and Tongue of Ionization (TOI) in the Southern Hemisphere during the 10 May 2024 super geomagnetic storm, using the three-dimensional Computerized Ionospheric Tomography (3DCIT) technique. Both SED and TOI structures at 500 km and 800 km exhibited unexpected and contrasting evolutionary trends: between 21:30 and 22:30 UT, they decayed at 500 km but expanded at 800 km. Simulations reveal distinct altitude-dependent transport linked to the SED and TOI. On the dayside, the upward E×B drift lifts plasma to the top ionosphere within the SED region. The poleward drift transported it into the TOI channel, producing the enhanced TOI at 800 km. On the nightside, the equatorward winds transported the plasma upward along the geomagnetic field lines, hence TOI depletion/enhancement at 500/800 km.
