Analysis of endophytic fungal communities of Norway spruce trees

The aim of the presented study is to investigate the possible link between the composition of endophytic fungal communities of Norway spruce and the occurrence of root and butt rot disease caused by Heterobasidion fungi. We hypothesized that Heterobasidion infections are associated with the significant changes in the composition of the endophytic fungal communities. To test these hypothesis, we investigated endophytic fungal communities of mature Norway spruce trees that were (1) apparently healthy and asymptomatic and (2) showed symptoms of wood decay caused by Heterobasidion infection. Additionally, impact of host tissue on the composition of endophytic fungal communities were investigated.
