Data collection involved gathering comprehensive field-level information. IPMNET growers completed a member journal aligned with YEN data requirements, covering field location, cropping history, soil type, cultivation strategy, use of cover or catch crops, and key agronomic practices such as sowing date, seed rate, and cultivar choice. Both IPMNET and YEN contributors provided details of pesticide use, including product names, doses, and, where available, timings of foliar sprays, plus seed treatments. These records enabled calculation of treatment frequency indices for foliar sprays, and proportion of seed treatment use was analysed separately. Calculation of Treatment Frequency Index Pesticide use data provided by farmers was used to calculate the Treatment Frequency Index (TFI), both overall and for herbicides, fungicides and insecticides separately. Maximum label dose rates for each product were identified using the UK Pesticides Register or, for older products, archived notices and other reliable sources. Where dose rates varied by crop growth stage, the appropriate value was selected based on the timing information supplied. Entries were excluded if the specific product could not be confirmed. TFI for each field and year was calculated as the sum of the proportions of the full label dose applied for each pesticide product, as shown in the equation below.
