African horse sickness virus is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and is a major cause of death in horses in many countries in Africa. Infection with African horse sickness virus is listed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) due to its high potential as a transboundary spread with high impact. As part of this project, African horse sickness viruses isolated from incurred field samples collected from equids and Culicoides midges will be sequenced. In addition, African horse sickness virus from vaccinated equids will be sequenced, along with surveillance samples from southern Africa to identify factors which drive genetic and antigenic evolution of African horse sickness virus.
