Seri Indian matriarch at the tribe's camp wearing facial paint, Tiburón Island, Sonora, Gulf of California, Mexico, 1936 March 10-11. "Dignified matriarch of the Seri clan on Tiburón Island whose sons are qualified by custom to be come cheiftains. Facial markings are applied with natural dies obtained from teh juices of plants or various forms of marine life. Seris now wear threadbade clothing cast off from civilization.
