Many of the abundantly recurrent heterotrophic bacterial taxa have not yet been cultivated. A high-throughput approach combining whole Cell Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ion -Time Of Flight Mass Spectroscopy with 16S rRNA sequencing was applied to the spring bloom of the year 2016. Most of the 4,136 classified strains were affiliated with Bacteroidetes, Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria.
