Lung Cancer Studies in Canis lupus familiaris

Naturally-occurring canine lung cancer is a powerful comparative model for human never-smoker lung cancer both clinically and biologically, but little is known about its genetic underpinnings. Using multi-platform sequencing of 78 tumors and 10 cell lines, we have mapped the genomic landscape of canine lung cancer. Tumors, matched normal samples and cell lines were analyzed using whole exome sequencing (5 dogs) or targeted panel sequencing (73 dogs and 10 cell lines). Identification of pathogenic mutations in canine lung cancer informs biological comparisons between canine and human never-smoker lung cancer while suggesting actionable targets in both species.
