This is a GIS of Djenné Mosque, Mopti, Mali. GIS (Geographic Information System) is a digital toolset used to map, analyze, and visualize spatial data related to a site, enabling the documentation, preservation, and interpretation of archaeological features and historical environments.<i>The information in this site description is provided for contextual purposes only and should not be regarded as a primary source.</i><br>The Great Mosque of Djenné exemplifies Sudano-Sahelian architecture, constructed from sun-dried mud bricks and wooden scaffolding beams. Architectural features include buttresses, pinnacles, and a central prayer hall. The mosque is central to the community’s religious life and reflects traditional building techniques adapted to local environmental conditions. It contributes to understanding Islamic architectural expression in West Africa.Djenné Mosque is part of the listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, <b>'Old Towns of Djenné'</b>.The Zamani Project seeks to increase awareness and knowledge of tangible cultural heritage in Africa and internationally by creating metrically accurate digital representations of historical sites. Digital spatial data of cultural heritage sites can be used for research and education, for restoration and conservation, and as a record for future generations.
