Memórias da construção da Rodovia Pa-458 de Bragança para Ajuruteua, nordeste do Pará, Costa Amazônica Brasileira

ABSTRACT In Bragança, state of Pará, Ajuruteua beach can be reached by highway PA-458, the construction of which brought deep social-environmental and cultural transformations, affecting flora and fauna, particularly the characteristic features of the mangroves where it was built. This study aims to analyze the narrative memories of those who had embraced the mangroves and to understand the historical process that defined the construction. Lenoble (2002), Diegues (2000; 2008), De La Torre (1997), among others, are the foundations of this essay. We acknowledge that the project was thought out only from the tourism perspective, disregarding environmental preservation and consequences for local residents. Nevertheless, the latter adapted to the new reality and began to see the road as a socially and economically beneficial undertaking, especially in terms of fishing, the city’s main economic activity.
