The sediment microbiota of 22 wetlands along 2,000 km of the U.S. Gulf and Southern Atlantic coastlines were surveyed. Sediment bacterial composition differed significantly by salinity level and between wetland sites of the classifications fresh, intermediate, brackish, and saline. The effect of salt was most noticeable at low levels of increased salinity, between fresh and intermediate marsh conditions.
