Protest Survey at Demonstrations against Hartz Reforms

Since 2003, researchers associated later with the Institute for the Study of Protest and Social Movements (Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung, ipb, http://protestinstitut.eu) have conducted surveys at demonstrations. This study is part of this ongoing series. The aim of the study is to gain insights into the composition and attitudes of participants at the demonstrations against the package if social reform laws dubbed “Agenda 2010” or “Hartz” reforms. The focus of the survey is particularly on socio-demographic characteristics, political attitudes and perceptions of the reforms held by the respondents encountered at the demonstrations. The demonstrations under study took place on September 13th, 2004 in Berlin, Dortmund, Leipzig, and Magdeburg with an estimated total of 10,700 participants. On the same day, demonstrations took place in 150 cities across Germany with an estimated total of 60,000 participants. The questionnaire consisted of 39 questions. It was available in German only. The questionnaire consists of the following sets of questions: • Protest activity • Knowledge of and evaluation of reform laws • Political attitudes: evaluation of democracy, trust in institutions, self-placement on the political spectrum, voting tendency • Sociodemographic questions: gender, year of birth, nationality, education, occupation • Motivation: open question about the motivation to take part in the demonstration Seit 2003 führen Forscher, die später mit dem Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung (ipb, http://protestinstitut.eu) in Verbindung standen, Umfragen bei Demonstrationen durch. Er war ausschließlich in deutscher Sprache verfügbar. Der Fragebogen umfasst folgende Themenbereiche: • Protestaktivitäten • Kenntnis und Bewertung der Reformgesetze • Politische Einstellungen: Bewertung der Demokratie, Vertrauen in Institutionen, Selbsteinstufung auf dem politischen Spektrum, Wahlverhalten • Soziodemografische Fragen: Geschlecht, Geburtsjahr, Staatsangehörigkeit, Bildung, Beruf • Motivation: offene Frage zur Motivation, an der Demonstration teilzunehmen
