Appraisal of the Archeological and Paleontological Resources of the Garrison Reservoir, North Dakota, Supplement

This report supplements a preliminary appraisal issued in 1948 it is the result of surveys carried on in the Garrison Reservoir area from August 22 to October 18, 1950 and at intervals during the 1951 field season. It also includes a resume of
the excavations carried on during the 1951 and 1952 field seasons. The report is prepared for the River Basin Recreation Survey, Region Two Office, National Park Service, in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding approved October 9, 1945. It is confidential, and is not to be reproduced in whole or in part or quoted for public information unless permission is obtained from the sponsoring agency.
The 1950 reconnaissance party consisted of George Metcalf and Ralph Vrana; the 1951 reconnaissance work was done by Metcalf, assisted at various times by Lee Madison, G. Hubert Smith, and Wayne Winyard. Excavations in 1951 and 1952 were conducted by Donald D. Hartle, James H. Howard, Carling Malouf, and G. Hubert Smith.
The 1947 survey, upon which the 1948 preliminary appraisal was based, was not carried into the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, and it was not untill 1950 that survey was accomplished in this area. Seventy archeological sites were recorded for the Garrison Resevoir prior to 1950; some of these were listed on the basis of local reports and of work done by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. The survey party checked 54 sites in 1950 and 29 were added in 1951; in all, a total of 153 sites have been visited and recorded in this reservoir.
Following the close of the 1950 field season the literature of the area was searched for reference to sites. The attempt to locate sites to which references were found -- one of the objectives of the 1951 field work -- was not wholly successful. It is probably that most of these sites were winter villages located on the low, timbered Missouri River bottoms.
A small amount of testing was done at three sites in 1950, and in 1951 several days were spent in testing three other sites. This work was in addition to intensive investigation of a number of sites by the River Basin Surveys and other research institutions.
