1-7501 Zapotec

The Zapotec are a culture from Oaxaca in southwest Mesoamerica. This figure is an example of a Zapotec Urn from the Classic Period (250-900 CE). They were often associated with tombs, holding things like food and drink. They vary in size form 10 cm to one meter. A typical characteristic of these figures are ear flares, portraying personhood, and identity. Many of the figures are made from a fine grey paste and have been found with a red coloring caused by cinnabar. Research into the figures has suggested that they have a connection with gods, ancestors, or the Zapotec calendar. Sellen, Adam T.
