Skin samples for genetic analysis were collected, using a crossbow, from
Antarctic Peninsula Humpback Whales from three austral summers (1995/96,
1996/97 and 1997/98). Dr. C. Scott Baker from Auckland University, New Zealand
and Dr. Luis Medrano from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México also
participated in this study. The objective of this study is to genetically
identify humpbacks that feed in this Antarctic waters. Using PCR technique
mitochondrial DNA, actin intron and microsateslites 52 samples were identified.
Sex was also identified.
