Permit-to-Carry Application Outcomes in New Jersey: A County-Level Analysis (2019–2024)

Description: This dataset provides information on permit to carry application approvals and denials within New Jersey split by county, and it contains details such as: county name, race/ethnicity, whether the application was approved or denied, the denial reason if denied, and how many individuals are contained within each category.

Some notes regarding the data: the manually created dataset only includes individuals within the Black, White, and Hispanic race/ethnicity categories. Additionally, the Hispanic category within the dataset contains individuals who identified as Hispanic or White with Hispanic/Spanish Origins. The data includes individuals of all ages and genders. An important reporting issue to note is that, within the Tableau dashboard from the NJ Office of the Attorney General, there were occasional inconsistencies regarding the number of application denials and how many denial reasons were reported, and it was possible for an individual to be denied for multiple reasons. Because of this, this dataset includes an additional denial reason of “Unknown,” in the rare occurrences where there was an insufficient number of denial reasons for a corresponding number of denials.

Methodology: The original data was manually captured, collected, and organized from a public Tableau dashboard published by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General. The data was submitted by New Jersey State Police and local police agencies, and it contains data on permit-to-carry applications from December 1, 2019 to August 16th, 2024.
