The current bacterial strain of Y. entercolitica was isolated from dead bats recovered from a massive die-off that likely caused by a local epidemic in Georgia at the end of April 2018. In Georgia, this was the first reported massive die-off of bats to our knowledge. The impact of infectious agents on bat mortality is largely unknown and has been neglected until now. Characterization of the novel strains cultured from bats can provide a clue for determining pathogenic properties specific for those strains.
