The then Environment Agency of Japan conducted the 2nd National Survey on Animal Distribution under the Basic Survey for Nature Conservation from 1978 (Showa 53) to 1979 (Showa 54), surveying the distribution of 8 medium- and large-sized mammal species since the Meiji Restoration: Japanese macaque, sika deer, Asiatic black bear, brown bear, wild boar, red fox, Japanese raccoon dog, and Japanese badger. For detailed information, please refer to the following linked resource: "Mammal Distribution Survey | Biodiversity Center, Natural Environment Bureau, Ministry of the Environment, Japan". This dataset is a digitized version of "Figure 13: National Distribution Mesh Map of Asiatic Black Bears and Brown Bears" published in the Environment Agency (1980). During digitization, the legend information was extracted by overlaying mesh polygons of the same size using the World Geodetic System 2011 (JGD2011) onto the distribution maps from the original report, which was organized using the 5x regional mesh (approx. 5 km × 5 km) of the former Japanese Geodetic Datum. Citation: Environment Agency. 1980. 2nd Basic Survey for Nature Conservation: National Report on Animal Distribution Survey (Mammals). Dataset Name: 1980 Basic Survey National Distribution Mesh Dataset for Bears Dataset Content: GIS data of the national distribution mesh maps for Asiatic black bears and brown bears from the 2nd National Survey on Animal Distribution (Mammals) under the Basic Survey for Nature Conservation. Survey Period: 1978-1979 Coordinate Reference System: JGD2011 (EPSG:6668) Character Encoding: UTF-8 Data Format: Polygon (approx. 5 km × 5 km mesh) Data Structure: - code: 5 km mesh code - hanrei_No: Legend Number (1, 2, 3, 4) - hanrei: Legend Information (1_Breeding Habitat, 2_Sighting Area, 3_Extinct Area, 4_No Information Available) - spname: Common Species Name (Brown Bear, Asiatic Black Bear, No Information) Reference Information For Asiatic black bear legends: "Breeding Habitat" refers to areas where bears overwinter and give birth, and where bears are thought to inhabit year-round. "Sighting Area" refers to areas where bears are not thought to inhabit year-round, but visit seasonally, particularly in search of food. For brown bear legends: "Breeding Habitat" refers to areas where bears overwinter and give birth, and where bears are thought to inhabit year-round. However, in Hokkaido, due to the limited opportunities to observe bears during the snow-covered hibernation period, areas with records from spring to autumn and areas with records of bears with cubs are also classified as breeding habitats. "Sighting Area" refers to areas where bears are not thought to inhabit year-round or from spring to autumn, but visit seasonally in search of food or other resources. Note: "SHAPE_Area" and "SHAPE_Length" are administrative metadata automatically generated by ArcGIS, and are not part of the official output of this dataset.
