In contrast to common textbook chemistry, aldehydes of N-alkyl(benz)imidazoles do not exist in their carbonyl structure; unexpectedly, under ambient conditions, they form isolable hemiacetals stabilized by strong intermolecular O–H–N hydrogen bonds, both in solution and in the solid state.
